KOTA KINABALU: An Indonesian geologist who sent out a distress call three days ago after he was stung by bees in the Sapulut Forest Reserve, was found safe by firemen on Wednesday (Aug 2).

The 24-year-old victim was found about 3km from the Sapulut Sungai Ulu Pinangah Forest Reserve in Kinabatangan at about 10.30am Wednesday (Aug 2), a spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Services Department said.

The victim had used a satellite phone to make a distress call on July 31 after he was stung while carrying out coal mapping studies in the area with four other Indonesians aged between 22 and 33 in his survey group.

“The victim reported breathing difficulties after bees stung him, and needed to be evacuated,” the spokesman said.

Firemen from Kinabatangan and interior Sook district were sent in to carry out the rescue in the area, about 180km from Kinabatangan town.

There are no telephone lines and the victim only communicated using a satellite phone to contact the rescue team.

“The search and rescue operation for the victim was conducted for three days before they found the victim,” the spokesman said, adding that the victim was sent in an ambulance to the Nabawan Health Clinic to receive follow-up treatment. (ends)
