FAMILY support, especially from parents, is crucial in ensuring the rehabilitation and reintegration of drug addicts, according to Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture. Tiong emphasizes that offering support to drug addicts is not an act of persecution but rather an opportunity for them to recover from addiction and become productive members of society once again. He highlights the importance of providing addicts with the chance to change their lives so that they can contribute positively to their families and communities. Tiong expressed these views during an anti-drug program called “Kampungku,” which was held in collaboration with the Dayak community of Rumah Nyudang in Sibu, Sarawak. The speech was read on his behalf by Cynthia Ong Hshiang Ping, the deputy Sibu district officer.
Tiong believes that the acceptance of addicts plays a significant role in determining their ability to stay away from drugs and avoid relapse. He points out that new addicts, particularly teenagers, emerge every year, including those who are still in school or have recently graduated. Tiong expresses concern over the involvement of higher education students in drug addiction, highlighting the significance of addressing this issue at every level of society. He urges all Malaysians, especially those in his constituency, to prioritize the well-being of their families by adopting healthy habits and lifestyles.
Furthermore, Tiong encourages parents and communities to remain vigilant and attentive to changes in their children’s behavior, as early intervention can help prevent drug abuse. He encourages individuals to become volunteers for the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) to provide support and assistance to more victims of drug addiction. Tiong’s call for involvement in community efforts to combat drug addiction reflects his vision of fostering a caring society that prioritizes the well-being of its members.
The minister’s speech underscores the importance of family support in the rehabilitation process and highlights the need for a collective effort to address drug addiction effectively. By recognizing the role of families, organizations, and communities in supporting addicts, Tiong emphasizes the potential for positive change and reintegration. His words serve as a reminder that addiction should not be stigmatized but rather seen as an opportunity for recovery and societal contribution. Tiong’s call to action inspires Malaysians to join the fight against drug addiction by actively participating in volunteer programs and promoting healthy lifestyles within their communities.
