Malaysia’s Bhangra ambassador and one-half of Goldkartz, Datuk Sukhjit Singh Gill, has passed away, according to a statement issued by his older brother, Datuk Amarjit Singh. Sukhjit, 34, passed away on Sunday (Dec 24) at 4.15pm due to a heart attack.
Sukhjit, the youngest son of Ipoh-based lawyer Tan Sri Darshan Singh Gill, is survived by his wife Datin Simerjit Kaur and a daughter.
Known fondly as Surj, Sukhjit gained popularity with his latest music release, “Sab Gazab,” which garnered 34 million YouTube views in just eight months.
Goldkartz, the music duo founded by Sukhjit, has earned numerous local and international awards and is recognized as Malaysia’s Bhangra Ambassadors. Additionally, they were the first Malaysian artists to perform at Wembley and have also created music for Bollywood.
In 2014, Sukhjit was called to the Bar at the Ipoh High Court, becoming the fifth member of his family to become a lawyer. He was a law graduate from Universiti Malaya.
Amarjit, who is the International Cycling Union (UCI) management board member and the vice-president of the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF), announced that the funeral will be held on Dec 26 at 1pm at the Sikh Crematorium on Jalan Gurdwara, next to Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Ipoh.
