KUALA LUMPUR: According to Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, the Deputy Energy Transition and Public Water Transformation Minister, the government is looking to expand the green energy industry with a focus on the export market once the country’s energy supply is stable. He mentioned that the current target is to achieve a 70% renewable energy supply by 2025.

He stated, “The current plan is for Malaysia to utilize the renewable energy we produce for our own needs first before considering exporting it to other countries. While there is a discussion on energy exchange, it is crucial to follow the necessary procedures to avoid any disruptions in our energy stability and ensure the long-term sustainability of our energy supply.”

Akmal made these comments in response to Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong’s suggestion to expand the green energy industry into the export market, highlighting the potential for revenue generation. Dr Wee also queried the imposed limit on green or solar energy consumption for individual households.

In addressing this concern, Akmal explained that the restrictions were implemented to maintain a stable supply of renewable energy. He mentioned, “Renewable energy is generated through various methods, not just rare earth. Our power generation system still heavily relies on conventional energy sources. Allowing renewable energy installations at individual residences requires a guarantee of continuous supply.”

“There are challenges in managing renewable energy, particularly in terms of stability. Hence, the government has opted for a phased approach to avoid disruptions in the current energy supply,” he added.

He emphasized the importance of ensuring a consistent and uninterrupted energy supply for the country before considering export opportunities. Akmal noted the need for a thorough process to safeguard energy stability and secure a reliable energy source for Malaysia.

Furthermore, he highlighted the complexities involved in incorporating renewable energy into the existing infrastructure and the steps being taken to address these challenges systematically. The gradual introduction of renewable energy at the household level aims to mitigate any potential risks to the overall energy system.

Overall, the government’s approach prioritizes energy security and sustainability while exploring opportunities for economic growth through the green energy sector. Akmal’s insights shed light on the intricate balance between domestic energy needs, renewable energy expansion, and future export potential for Malaysia.
