KUALA LUMPUR: Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming has announced plans to set up a total of 10,000 electric vehicle charging bays (EVCB) nationwide in the next two years. The target was established after the announcement of planning guidelines aimed at expediting and standardizing the development of EVCBs.

“By 2025, our aim is to have 10,000 EVCB across the country, which is a significant increase compared to the current number of 1,267,” Nga stated during a press conference at Parliament on Oct 12.

According to the guidelines, local councils will be responsible for approving applications to establish EV stations in their jurisdiction, both indoors and outdoors—including rooftops—within a time frame of seven to 14 days.

Nga also highlighted that the guidelines for setting up EV stations will be standardized in each state, ensuring a consistent approach nationwide.

In addition, Nga revealed that the Ministry, in collaboration with PLANMalaysia, is set to launch the National Electric Vehicle Dashboard by Nov 1. This dashboard will provide investors with information on 10,596 suitable locations where they can set up EV stations.

Moreover, Nga pointed out that existing operators of the 1,276 ECVBs will be granted a two-year grace period to register their stations with the relevant local council.
