KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the government will provide RM230 million to the Health Ministry for the upgrading of technology in laboratories used for drug testing.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the 14 labs currently conducting drug testing are equipped with outdated technology, emphasizing the importance of up-to-date equipment in verifying drug content for legal purposes.
He stated, “This is about the law, especially since the content of the drugs needs to be verified through tests, from the labs to the courts.”
Zahid mentioned that the decision to allocate funds for upgrading was made during the first Cabinet Committee Meeting on Combating Drug Abuse for the year 2024.
He added, “The Health Ministry will prepare a Cabinet paper to replace the current equipment with new lab technology that utilizes the latest testing methods for drugs.”
Highlighting the importance of utilizing advancements from countries experienced in drug testing, Zahid stressed the need for Malaysia to enhance its capabilities in this regard.
He further emphasized, “It is high time we upgrade ours,” as the technologies being acquired have been proven effective in testing various drugs.
The announcement was made by Zahid during a press conference following the Cabinet Committee Meeting on Combating Drug Abuse on Tuesday (March 26).
