The government is exploring a new model for transportation services, particularly trains, by considering the leasing method to extend their lifespan, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Loke explained that under this new approach, the government would not focus on purchasing new assets but instead opt to lease them. The lessor would also be responsible for the maintenance of the assets, ensuring their maximum usability.

By leasing instead of buying, Loke emphasized that the deal would include maintenance responsibilities, guaranteeing that the assets are always in optimal condition for usage.

During the Ministers’ Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, Loke addressed a supplementary question from Khairil Nizam Khirudin about the estimated RM250 million cost for train maintenance to prevent technical issues during festive seasons.

Recognizing the significant issue of maintenance in railway services, Loke mentioned that discussions would be held with the Finance Ministry and Economy Ministry to evaluate the suitability of this leasing model in enhancing transportation services.

Furthermore, responding to a query from Wong Shu Qi regarding additional stations along the Gemas-Johor Baru Double Track Project, Loke mentioned the ministry’s encouragement of public-private partnerships in collaboration with the Railway Asset Corporation (RAC) and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB).

He highlighted that station construction is not solely the government’s responsibility, proposing that developers could build stations in conjunction with housing developments, with costs borne by them.

Loke also pointed out the potential for increased development and real estate value in areas with train station connectivity, emphasizing the broader benefits of such infrastructure.

Addressing Wong’s initial query about the completion timeline for the Gemas-Johor Bahru Twin Track Project, Loke revealed that the 192-kilometer project is set to finish by April 21, 2025.

He also shared plans for the introduction of KTM Commuter services in the Gemas – Paloh – Johor Baru route, with the Ministry working on procuring new electric train sets for KTM Komuter services in the southern sector on a lease basis through the Railway Asset Corporation.
