PETALING JAYA: In order to ensure political stability and boost market confidence, Bersih has called for the unity government led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to sign an inter-coalition peace deal with Perikatan Nasional after the upcoming state elections. The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections emphasized the importance of such a deal, pointing to the memorandum of understanding signed by the government of Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Pakatan Harapan in September 2021, which resulted in 13 months of political stability.

According to Bersih, Anwar and parliamentary Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin should commit to negotiating a peace deal post-state elections, in order to address the continuous rumors of a midterm change of government that undermine political stability and market confidence. This, in turn, would assure both domestic and foreign investors that Malaysia can focus on economic rejuvenation.

In a statement issued on Sunday (July 16), Bersih stated, “Bersih said Parliament can and must play a main role in a sustainable political peace till the end of 2027, which would require the empowerment of Opposition MPs and government backbenchers to not plot for the government collapse.”

Bersih also highlighted the need for a level playing field that allows the Opposition to compete constructively and professionally, emphasizing the importance of respecting the outcomes of elections and government formation. The organization hopes that both the unity government and Perikatan Nasional would positively respond to this call, particularly in light of the political fatigue and apathy present among many voters, which could lead to a dangerously low turnout in the state elections.
