PUTRAJAYA: The government is exploring the need for a regulatory framework for artificial intelligence (AI) to address ethical concerns related to its use, according to Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi, speaking at a press conference on Tuesday (Aug 1) after delivering his keynote address at the Public Sector Day Malaysia programme, said that establishing a framework would help the government better understand the challenges of using this new technology.
“This is a new technology, and we need a group of experts from government agencies and the industry to help us understand some of the challenges. AI could have an impact on employment,” Fahmi said.
He further added, “Many people have already begun using AI applications, so the government should consider establishing a regulatory framework for the responsible use of this technology.”
AI is an innovative technology that imitates human intelligence to perform tasks and can continuously enhance its capabilities based on the information it acquires.
Fahmi suggested that Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) collaborate with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) to produce a special program in Malay discussing AI, aiming to enhance people’s understanding of this technology.
“In line with the advancement of the technology sector, I hope RTM can collaborate with DBP on this. Such efforts can contribute to expanding the Malay vocabulary in relation to technology,” Fahmi stated.
According to Fahmi, language development must keep pace with technological progress to ensure that new technologies are easily understood across all levels of society.
“When we have an extensive vocabulary related to technology in Malay, comprehension will become easier,” he emphasized.
In his keynote address, Fahmi emphasized that Malaysia requires more talent and expertise in data and technology as the country heads towards a golden digital decade and positions itself as an Asian digital leader.
“Opportunities abound in enhancing public services by embracing digitalization, as Malaysia strives to become a digital-first nation and embark on a prosperous digital decade,” Fahmi said.
Regarding the MyDigital Initiative, Fahmi highlighted that since its launch in February 2021, significant progress has been made in transforming Malaysia into a digitally enabled, technologically advanced high-income nation and a regional leader in the digital economy.
Additionally, the government is contemplating positioning Malaysia as a hub for sustainable and resilient data center investments. – Bernama
