IPOH: The government plans to install more public high-voltage direct current (DC) charging stations to overcome “range anxiety” in electric vehicle (EV) owners, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.

The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said that the DC charging stations, despite being costlier as compared to the alternating current (AC) charging stations, were more in demand.

“When the ministry conducted a survey, many EV owners voiced out that it would be better if more DC charging stations were made available for fast charging purposes.

“Thus with the government’s target of constructing 10,000 EV charging stations by the end of next year, we will re-examine adding more DC stations,” he said.

Tengku Zafrul said this after opening the Ipoh Barat Umno division delegates’ annual general meeting at the state Umno building on Saturday (July 13).

He was asked to comment on the 2,585 EV charging stations made available since June 25 so far nationwide, having been asked if the target of 10,000 stations would be met by next year.

He said in the last two or three months, more charging stations were installed and added that bureaucracy was reduced once Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof set-up a one-stop-centre.

“With the centre in place, approvals were done faster. So I am sure we are able to reach the target of 10,000 charging stations with serious focus,” he said.

In his speech earlier, Tengku Zafrul said Umno is still relevant, and has not lost its shine.

“We as Umno members must ensure that the struggles of the party remain relevant not only in Umno, but for the people as a whole. We have to work hard, and smart to ensure we head towards the right outcome,” he said.
