PETALING JAYA: In an effort to enhance internet connectivity on campuses, the government plans to install 40 Starlink satellite broadband devices at higher education institutions. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim addressed the issue after receiving multiple complaints about slow internet connectivity during his visits to universities across the country. Anwar held a virtual meeting with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Friday (July 14) to discuss this matter.
“During the meeting with Musk, I instructed Fahmi Fadzil (Communications and Digital Minister) to purchase the Starlink devices as soon as possible. These devices will be installed in universities that require improved connectivity,” Anwar stated. Musk has generously offered to provide 40 devices and has assured that additional units can be purchased for installation in rural areas,” he added. Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, highlighted that the satellite devices will ultimately be extended to rural areas to support local entrepreneurs.
“Our initial focus will be on universities, polytechnics, and schools that are in need of internet access,” Anwar commented. He further explained that these small devices have the ability to transform slow connections into faster ones. “In cases where there is no internet connection at all, the device will be provided as it is directly linked to the satellite,” he emphasized. Anwar also revealed that Musk’s decision to invest in Malaysia is based on the country’s political stability and economic direction.
“He understands that I am leading a stable government. Anwar, together with Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, and Gabungan Parti Sarawak, ensures a strong government and clear economic policies,” Anwar stated. “He wants to know our direction and our key priorities, which include the rural economy, food security, and the digital economy,” Anwar concluded.
