    Grandfather killed, grandson injured in accident in in Alor Setar

    ALOR SETAR: An accident involving a car and motorcycle on Tuesday morning (July 30) killed a 79-year-old grandfather and left his three-year-old grandson with head injuries.

    Kota Setar District Police Chief ACP Siti Nor Salawati Saad said in a statement that the incident occurred around 9am on Tuesday (July 30).

    “The Kota Setar District Police Headquarters control centre received information about a road accident involving a car and a motorcycle that occurred in front of Taman Puteri in Pokok Sena, Kedah.

    “When they arrived at the location, they found that the motorcyclist, a 79-year-old man, was unresponsive and subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

    “The victim’s three-year-old grandson, who was injured, was immediately rushed to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for further treatment,” she said in a statement on Tuesday evening (July 30).

    Siti Nor Salawati said initial police investigations found that the incident was believed to be caused by a car travelling from Kuala Nerang to Alor Setar, which hit the motorcycle.

    “The collision in front of Taman Puteri in Pokok Sena resulted in the two vehicles crashing and veering to the side of the road.

    “We are still conducting further investigations by tracking down witnesses to find out the true cause of the accident.

    “The victim’s remains have been taken to the Forensic Department of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for further investigation.

    “While the three-year-old child, who suffered head injuries, is being treated in the Red Zone at the same hospital,” she said.

    She added that the 28-year-old man driving the car sustained minor injuries and is receiving treatment in the Yellow Zone at the same hospital.

    “The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving,” she said.

    She urged the public, especially those who might have witnessed the accident, to come forward to the Kota Setar Police Station or contact Traffic Investigation Officer Insp Mohamad Nor Amin Shariffudin at 04-732 1222 or 017-4746379 to assist with the investigation. – Bernama
