A 78-year-old grandfather and his one-year, seven-month-old grandson were discovered drowned in a pool near a restaurant at Taman Kempas in Sungai Petani on Monday (Sept 11).
Kuala Muda OCPD Asst Comm Zaidy Che Hassan stated that the police received a MERS 999 call from a member of the public who informed them about the incident at approximately 7.20pm.
A team of police officers and personnel from the Tikam Batu police station quickly responded and arrived at the scene at 7.28pm, where they found both victims floating in the one-meter deep pool.
As per the eyewitness, numerous people had gathered around the pool and upon discovering the two bodies floating in it, the witness promptly called MERS 999, ACP Zaidy explained in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 12).
With assistance from the locals, the bodies of the victims were recovered from the pool, ACP Zaidy confirmed.
During the investigation, the father of the child revealed that he used to take his son for a walk every day after picking him up from his mother, who worked at a restaurant on Jalan Kempas, ACP Zaidy shared.
The father began searching for both his father and son when they did not return home by 7pm. He then observed a crowd near the pool and unfortunately discovered the bodies of his father and son floating in the water, ACP Zaidy added.
Following thorough investigation and examination, no evidence of foul play or any criminal activity was found in relation to the incident, according to ACP Zaidy.
The victims, who resided in Kampung Matang Berangan in Pinang Tunggal, were pronounced dead by medical officers at the scene, he added.
The bodies were subsequently transported to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
