Members of DAP and Umno have expressed mixed feelings about their newly formed cooperation, describing it as “strange” and “uncomfortable.” However, both parties are keen on strengthening their friendship. At the DAP national congress, some delegates felt awkward about Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s presence, considering the history of attacks between the two parties. One Perak delegate saw it as a historic and “weird” development, acknowledging the country’s maturing politics. Another division leader from Johor, Wong, mentioned some delegates criticizing the party leadership for compromising their principles and emphasized the need for DAP to convince its grassroots.

A senior DAP leader acknowledged the challenge of convincing the grassroots about the collaboration, having faced criticism initially. However, the scoldings have lessened as many now recognize the importance of a moderate government compared to Perikatan Nasional. Nevertheless, efforts to win over DAP’s grassroots must continue, with preparations for the 16th General Election already underway.

An Umno branch chief from an east coast state noted the suspicion among fellow colleagues towards DAP due to decades of name-calling and animosity. Convincing Umno members to accept DAP has proved challenging, considering the negative perception built over years. Despite observing the sincerity of DAP’s efforts, changing the deep-rooted perception within a few months is not easy.

A senior Umno leader acknowledged the ongoing suspicion but noted that grassroots members are gradually adapting to the new friendship. However, there are concerns about certain DAP leaders who have made extreme statements in the past, especially regarding sensitive issues such as Islam and the rights of the Malay community. Both parties hope to manage members or leaders with a tendency for insensitive remarks.
