PUTRAJAYA: The National Resources, Energy and Climate Change Ministry has announced the introduction of a new premium for Green Electricity Tariff (GET) starting in August. According to the ministry’s minister, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the rate for GET will be 21.8 sen/kWh, which is based on the cost of green electricity supplies in neighboring countries that offer the same services. This represents a significant increase from the previous tariff of 3.7 sen/kWh. “It will come into effect beginning Aug 1,” said Nik Nazmi during a press conference on Friday (July 14).

In addition to the new rate, Nik Nazmi also mentioned that the quota of 30% for GET usage per establishment will be abolished. Instead, consumers will now have the option to subscribe to up to 100% of their renewable energy requirements. He emphasized that the returns from the GET program will be utilized to develop and increase the capacities of renewable energy sources for the national electricity supply.

Nik Nazmi expressed hope that these initiatives will encourage more consumers to participate in the program. “Subscriptions to green electricity supplies enable better efforts towards supporting the transition towards renewable energy,” he said. “This allows for the increase in capacity and development of renewable energy sources for the national electricity supply.”

Existing GET subscribers have until July 31 to decide whether they want to continue their subscription. Failure to do so will result in automatic termination of the service. Consumers can inform Tenaga Nasional Berhad of their decision. For more information about the program, consumers can visit their nearest Tenaga Nasional Berhad outlets.
