The Mentri Besar of Johor, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, has announced that a framework will be introduced in November to steer Johor towards becoming a greener state. This initiative, known as the Johor Green Deal, will be launched in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Climate Week 2023 (APCW 2023), an international event hosted by the state from November 13 to 17.
Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi emphasized the growing danger of climate change and sees APCW as an opportunity for improvements. He describes the Johor Green Deal as a sustainability plan to ensure Johor’s greener future. The details of this plan will be disclosed during the launch.
Regarding the successful bid to host APCW 2023 over countries like South Korea, China, Thailand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, Onn Hafiz expressed the state’s honor and delight in welcoming the 2,000 participants from 150 countries. The event will encompass talks, technology showcases, and presentations on addressing climate change. Johor will also share its experiences in disaster management, particularly in relation to floods, and learn from other countries in this field.
Johor had experienced severe floods at the end of February, displacing approximately 80,000 victims in 10 districts. Niclas Svenningsen, the programme coordination manager of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, acknowledged the tough competition faced by Johor in securing the hosting rights for APCW 2023 and praised the state’s dedication and leadership in this endeavor, as they believe it will inspire commitment to addressing climate challenges in the region.
APCW 2023 is part of a series of four regional climate weeks held this year to foster momentum leading up to the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai.
