The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has stated that homemakers can save up to RM100 a month by growing their own vegetables. CAP education officer NV Subbarow mentioned that growing vegetables at home, even in a car shed, can significantly reduce the cost of living.
CAP has successfully grown ash gourd (winter melon) in a car shed, yielding 20 of them with more expected to grow. This amount is sufficient to sustain for a few months. A kilogram of ash gourd costs RM15, while the vegetables from CAP’s urban garden weigh between 7kg to 10kg.
With the prices of vegetables not expected to decrease in the near future due to the rainy season, Subbarow emphasized that planting vegetables in one’s backyard is currently the only solution. He highlighted that consumers can plant common vegetables, such as sawi (mustard greens), kangkung (water spinach), kailan, spinach, peppermint, pegaga kesum, and selom (water celery), without requiring a large space.
CAP is offering training and practice opportunities for anyone interested in acquiring vegetable planting skills, especially housewives. Those who are interested can contact Subbarow at 012-537 4899 for further information.
