BUKIT MERTAJAM: A two-storey unisex hair salon in Jalan Datuk Ooh Chooi Cheng was destroyed in a fire on Sunday (Sept 22).
In the midnight incident, four other shophouses near the hair salon were also damaged by the flames.
State Fire and Rescue Department spokesman estimated that about 80% of the hair salon and the adjacent shop were damaged while the remaining three shophouses were only lightly singed.
“A team of 20 firefighters including the operation commander from Bukit Mertajam, Bandar Perda, Perai and Sungai Bakap fire stations were deployed to the scene after the department received the distress call from the public at about 12.20am on Sunday (Sept 22), ” said the spokesman.
The spokesman said each of the shophouses with an estimated area of 15×45 square feet for each unit was already on fire when the firemen arrived at the location.
He said the firemen proceeded with extinguishing and controlling the fire in the operation. They proceeded to perform an overhaul operation after the fire was extinguished to ensure there were no further hazards at the location.
No casualties were reported from the incident.
“The case is handed over to the fire investigation officer for further action,” he said.
