KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has urged media organisations to involve more young people in journalism to ensure its continued growth in Sabah. He noted that not many young people are choosing journalism as a career option, primarily due to the unattractive salary packages offered. Hajiji suggested that media organisations should consider offering appropriate salaries and incentives to attract more young people to the field in the future. He made these remarks while officiating the 2023 Kinabalu Press Awards (KPA) in Kota Kinabalu.
Also present at the event were Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Sabah Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, and Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) president Datuk Muguntan Vanar.
Hajiji also called on media practitioners to continue playing their part in disseminating information about the government’s achievements at the grassroots level. This, he believes, will enhance people’s confidence in the government. He stressed the importance of smart cooperation between media practitioners and the state government, emphasizing the need to strengthen this partnership consistently. The goal is to ensure effective communication of the successes achieved through the Sabah Maju Jaya development plan directly to the people.
Meanwhile, the 2023 KPA saw Bernama receiving two major awards and seven merit awards.
