PUTRAJAYA: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has confirmed that his bank accounts along with his wife’s accounts have been frozen by authorities.
Hamzah stated that their accounts have been frozen since Wednesday (Aug 23), alleging that the reason behind this action was the “pressure and interference of high-level political leaders” in the administration.
“The freeze (of accounts) which was then informed to the media is a desperate attempt by the government led by (Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim to continue to pressure the leadership of Perikatan Nasional which is gaining the people’s trust more and more,” he said on Thursday (Aug 24).
In the recently concluded six state polls, Perikatan won 146 out of the total 245 state seats.
Hamzah claimed that this move is a political prosecution similar to the case against Perikatan chairman and Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He further accused the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the Attorney-General’s Chambers of being exploited to tarnish the reputation of Perikatan leaders.
Hamzah expressed his belief that more politically motivated actions will be taken against him and other Perikatan leaders, including investigations by the police for his criticism of DAP during the recent state elections.
“Actions by the Pakatan Harapan – Barisan Nasional government will not hinder my struggles. For the sake of the nation and the people, I will continue to fight,” he added.
Hamzah also mentioned that a letter of demand has been sent to the MACC, its chief commissioner, and the government.
On Wednesday, it was reported that the bank accounts of an Opposition leader and their family members were frozen by the Inland Revenue Board.
These frozen accounts are believed to be part of an ongoing investigation by the MACC.
