A man in Bukit Mertajam, aged 46, was recently given a sentence of one day in jail and fined RM12,000, or six months’ jail if the fine is not paid, by a Magistrate’s Court for dragging a dog along the road using a motorcycle.
Tan Chee Keong admitted to causing suffering to the dog by dragging it with a 182cm chain attached to a motorcycle in Taman Sukun Indah at 12.06am on November 21, 2023.
The charge was presented to Tan in Hokkien with the help of a court interpreter, and he acknowledged his guilt before Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan.
During the plea for leniency, Tan’s lawyer, Anas Hakimi from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK), mentioned that Tan, who works as a hawker and has a young child to support, has been deeply affected by the incident and has been unable to work for two months.
The case was prosecuted by DPP Roziman Awang Tahrin from the state Veterinary Department.
