A family of six in Taman Menglembu Impiana Adril is facing harassment from loan sharks, demanding repayment for a debt they did not borrow. Tan Sooi Chan, a 61-year-old hawker, revealed that they have recently received threats from the loan sharks, including threats to burn down their house. The situation has left them living in fear. Tan explained that they first received WhatsApp messages in June, but they believe that the loan sharks are actually looking for her nephew and have urged them to pursue him instead of harassing their family. This was disclosed by Tan during a press conference held by Perak MCA public service and complaints bureau chief Low Guo Nan on August 23.
The harassment has escalated, as the loan sharks splashed red paint on Tan’s house gate and two cars on July 27 and August 18. The loan sharks have even used a padlock and chain to lock their front gate, and they broke the back windscreen of Tan’s son’s car. The loan sharks also affixed a notice on the gate. Tan stated that when she confronted the loan shark about the amount borrowed, she was informed that her nephew borrowed RM1,000 but now owes them RM64,000. Tan revealed that her nephew visited their house earlier this year, and she suspects he took their utility bills and borrowed money using their address.
Tan also shared that her nephew had previously caused loan sharks to harass another relative. His parents had settled some of his debt in the past, but they have since disowned him. Tan added that the loan shark informed them about their lodged police reports and even showed them the report numbers, names, and details, claiming to have connections with the police. In light of the situation, Tan has installed CCTV cameras at her home. She pleaded for the harassment to stop.
Low expressed shock at the boldness of the loan sharks’ threats, deeming it a serious matter. He urged the police to take stern actions and called for increased patrols near the family’s residence.
