The Education Minister, Fadhlina Sidek, has called on schools to adhere to set guidelines in response to the haze affecting certain areas of the country. She stated that one of the conditions in the guideline is that schools cannot conduct outdoor activities if the air pollution index (API) reading exceeds 100.
“We consistently emphasize that these guidelines are applicable to everyone and must be followed to prevent any unfortunate incidents,” she told reporters after closing the national-level Mahrajan Al-Quran program on October 2nd.
This morning, the number of areas with unhealthy API readings increased to 16, spanning nine states. The highest reading was recorded in Cheras, with a reading of 164. Sidek added, “We will seek the advice of the Health Ministry periodically to determine recommendations such as school closures or the usage of face masks.”
Regarding the issue of teacher shortages, Sidek mentioned that the ministry is actively collaborating with the Education Service Commission (SPP) to address the problem. She explained, “The shortage is temporary, and we have recently completed interviews for one-time recruitment. We are currently hiring on a contract of service (COS) basis.”
Previously, the National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) reported that schools nationwide were facing a shortage of over 20,000 teachers, necessitating immediate solutions.
Regarding the Mahrajan Al-Quran program, Fadhlina stated that approximately 688 participants from primary and secondary schools attended the annual event. She highlighted that the program aims to enhance students’ potential, personality, and improve their abilities and courage.
