KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry will establish a National Institute of Pre-Hospital Treatment and Disaster Medicine to ensure the provision of high-quality services, particularly during calamities or disasters, according to Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa (pic). Additionally, the ministry will streamline the existing hotspot collaboration between St. John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM), the Malaysian Red Crescent (BSMM), and the ministry for the same purpose.
Dr Zaliha emphasized the importance of maintaining the sharing of expertise between the ministry and the Emergency Medical Rescue Services of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) to facilitate efficient and safe duties. This includes continuing fire safety training and disaster management efforts.
During the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department, Dr Zaliha stated that the collaboration between the two parties aims to enhance pre-hospital and ambulance treatment (PRPA) in the country. The capacity of pre-hospital services has already been improved through the launch of the Emergency Air Ambulance Rescue Service (EMARS).
The collaboration between the ministry and the department involves the sharing of emergency rescue vehicle resources, the placement of ministry members with the rescue vehicles, the provision of “online medical direction” service from the Medical Emergency Coordination Centre (MECC) to the vehicles, and on-the-job training placement for teams at the Emergency and Trauma Department of the KKM Hospital. – Bernama
