Eight localities in Peninsular Malaysia are now experiencing a Level 2 heatwave, according to the latest advisory from MetMalaysia. This includes the entire state of Perlis and parts of Kedah and Perak. The affected areas are Kubang Pasu, Padang Terap, Pokok Sena, Sik, Hulu Perak, Baling, and Kota Setar.
Under Level 2 heatwave status, the daily maximum temperature can reach between 37 degrees Celcius and 40 degrees Celcius for three consecutive days. This marks the highest number of localities experiencing a Level 2 heatwave since the onset of the dry hot season this year, which has been intensified by the ongoing El Nino phenomenon.
Additionally, Kinta and Kuala Kangsar in Perak, as well as Pendang and Kuala Muda in Kedah, are currently under a Level 1 heatwave, with temperatures ranging between 35 degrees Celcius and 37 degrees Celcius for three consecutive days.
Health director-general Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan emphasized on Saturday that all outdoor activities in schools located in Level 1 heatwave areas should be suspended for the safety and well-being of the students.
