In IPOH, an environmental non-governmental organisation is urging authorities to take heed of the decree issued by Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah regarding the approval of projects in Cameron Highlands. Regional Environmental Awareness Cameron Highlands (Reach) president A. Dilip Martin emphasized that His Majesty’s decree from January 2023 should not be overlooked, calling attention to the need for a review of project approvals in the highlands.
Martin pointed out the ongoing issue of uncontrolled development in Cameron Highlands, with government agencies granting approval for new projects in areas that are environmentally sensitive. Al-Sultan Abdullah, during a visit to flood-affected areas in Kampung Raja on Jan 7th, had decreed the reevaluation of project approvals in Cameron Highlands and the temporary suspension of approvals if deemed necessary.
Expressing concern over the rising number of development projects in the highlands, His Majesty stressed the importance of giving serious attention to prevent any undesirable incidents. Reach expressed gratitude for the Sultan’s decree and urged government agencies in Cameron Highlands to adhere to it.
According to Martin, certain areas, such as Tringkap, have been classified as Rank 1 environmentally sensitive areas in the Cameron Highlands Regional Development Plan 2030. He lamented the approvals granted to developers in Tringkap, emphasizing the need for both state and federal governments to play pivotal roles in conserving the environment in Cameron Highlands.
