In Johor Baru, a man who recently jumped into a drain to rescue a stranger has expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he received from the public. Choo Ngiam Choong (pic), at 50 years old, did not anticipate that his spontaneous act would garner so much attention from Malaysians.
Choo said, “I was merely doing my duty as a fellow human being, and I believe there are others who would have done the same if they were at the scene.”
As a result of the incident going viral, Choo’s phone was inundated with calls and messages from friends, family, and even strangers commending him for his heroic deed.
“Many also praised me and gave kind words of encouragement on social media. It’s all very touching and overwhelming. I am thankful for and humbled by those kind words,” he added.
While Choo does not consider himself a hero, he hopes his actions will serve as an inspiration for others to help those around them, including strangers, in their own ways. “The important thing is to be sincere and do things from the heart,” he said.
Choo also received an award from the Johor police for his courageous act. The incident occurred in Kota Tinggi, where Choo was on his way to breakfast with friends when they noticed a car being carried away by the current, with a woman clinging to the back of the partially submerged vehicle.
