TANJUNG MALIM: Two additional agreements have brought the high-tech automotive valley project in Malaysia closer to becoming a reality.

Before the agreement signing ceremony took place, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a high-level meeting to discuss the proposed Automotive Hi-Tech Valley (AHTV) at Proton City in Tanjung Malim. Attendees included members of the AHTV project team, along with federal and state government officials.

The first agreement, known as the Master Collaboration Agreement (MCA), was signed by Azri Zaharuddin, the Chief Operating Officer of DRB-Hicom Bhd’s properties and corporate planning and strategy group, and Dr Wei Mei, the Senior Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd (Geely). The purpose of this agreement is to establish and formalize the foundational principles, governance framework, and mutual commitment of the AHTV project, including specific roles to be taken on for development and promotional initiatives.

The second agreement, called the Heads of Agreement (HOA), was signed by Richard Kitts, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Altel Communications Sdn Bhd (Altel), and Tony Wang, the Chief Executive Officer of Zhejiang Geespace Technology Co Ltd (Geespace), a company strategically invested by Geely. This agreement is focused on the development and implementation of advanced technological systems and aims to expedite the deployment of innovative solutions within sectors such as smart ports.

During Anwar’s visit to Beijing for the Malaysia-China Business Summit in April, a groundbreaking RM170 billion worth of investments from China were signed through 19 memorandums of understanding (MOUs). A significant highlight of this event was the agreement to develop the RM32 billion AHTV in Tanjung Malim, which will mainly concentrate on new energy vehicles (NEV).

Anwar, in a Facebook post, described AHTV as a monumental project that will transform Tanjung Malim into a global automotive hub for NEV. He emphasized that it will also expand to encompass talent development, research and development, and urbanization. He further stated that the support of the unity government and the smooth progress of this project serve as a testament to Malaysia’s approach in efficiently and promptly facilitating investments.

Notable figures present at the agreement signing event included Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry; Chang Lih Kang, the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation; Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, the Mentri Besar of Perak; Eric Li, the Chairman of Geely; and Syed Faisal Albar, the Chairman of Proton.
