KUCHING: Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the city centre’s historic General Post Office building will be returned to the state government. The building is one of the 52 plots of land to be returned to Sarawak by the Federal Government.
Abang Johari said, “We want to take it back because it’s an iconic heritage building.” The General Post Office building was built in 1931 with a distinct neo-classical style and Corinthian columns.
The return of undeveloped land acquired by the Federal Government was discussed at the Malaysia Agreement 1963 technical committee meeting. Abang Johari said, “Since the land remained unused, we requested it to be given back to Sarawak.”
He also mentioned that the state government would return the premium paid by the Federal Government at the time it acquired the land. Furthermore, the state government has its own plans for developing the land.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof chaired the technical committee meeting and announced that the Federal Government agreed to return 55 lots of land, including 52 lots owned by Sarawak.
