BALING: Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has called for a more comprehensive screening and profiling process for foreign artistes before they are permitted to perform in Malaysia.
Speaking at the Malaysia Madani – Human Capital and Personality Development Seminar in Kuala Ketil on Saturday (July 22), the Home Minister emphasized the importance of upholding the country’s values, culture, and religious beliefs while welcoming foreign artistes to perform.
He urged organisers to learn from the recent incident at the Good Vibes Festival 2023 in Sepang, where British band The 1975 displayed distasteful behavior during their performance.
Saifuddin Nasution stressed that organizers have a responsibility to assess the compatibility of performances with local cultural practices and sensitivities.
Regarding the band’s criticism of Malaysia’s LGBT laws, he stated that international performers should educate themselves on a country’s laws and respect them.
He expressed his disappointment with The 1975’s disregard for good values and emphasized that their behavior is considered unacceptable in Malaysia.
The Home Minister concluded by stating that the incident should serve as a lesson for everyone, highlighting the band’s excessive cursing, consumption of alcohol, and behavior that contradicted local values and culture.
He emphasized that while individuals are entitled to voice their frustrations with certain rules, it is important to understand that Malaysia upholds the rule of law and that no religion in the country can accept The 1975’s behavior. – Bernama
