The Home Ministry has issued a Prohibition Order against the graphic novel “When I Was A Kid” by Cheeming Boey, as stated in Government Gazette P.U.(A) 283 dated Sept 25.
According to the ministry’s statement, the Prohibition Order is in accordance with Section 7(1) of the Printing and Publishing Act 1984, which regulates the printing, importing, reproduction, publication, sale, production, circulation, distribution, or ownership of publications that are strictly prohibited in Malaysia.
The government aims to uphold regulations on publications to prevent the dissemination of material that contradicts local socio-cultural norms, which may jeopardize national harmony and general well-being.
In this particular case, the publication is subjected to a Prohibition Order due to its potential harm to morals and public interest, causing concern and anxiety among the community.
The ministry highlights that under Section 8(2) of the Printing and Publishing Machinery Act 1984, anyone involved in printing, importing, producing, reproducing, publishing, selling, circulating, offering to sell, distributing, or possessing anything related to the publication can be imprisoned for a maximum of three years, fined up to RM20,000, or both upon conviction.
