KUALA LUMPUR: The Peninsular Malaysia Labour Department will have a meeting with MYAirline Sdn Bhd (MYAirline) management on Monday (Oct 16) regarding the sudden suspension of operations, according to Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar.

Sivakumar stated that the department and Social Security Organisation (Socso) have been instructed to investigate the situation following the airline’s announcement of immediate suspension on Thursday (Oct 12).

“The government is taking this issue seriously.

“Socso has contacted the airline staff and has taken the necessary actions,” he said during a press conference at the Parliament lobby.

Sivakumar was asked if the ministry would initiate a formal investigation into the claims made by the airline’s employees that they have not received their wages.

He had previously mentioned that if the airline terminates its 500 employees, they would be entitled to receive benefits from Socso’s Employment Insurance Scheme.

MYAirline cited financial pressures as the reason for the immediate suspension of operations.

Earlier on Monday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke declared that the airline’s license would be temporarily suspended.

Loke also mentioned that MYAirline is expected to hold a press conference later in the day, and emphasized that the management must provide an explanation and guarantees to its staff and passengers.

A motion on the MYAirline situation will also be discussed in Parliament’s Special Chamber at 2.30pm, with Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibullah answering questions as Loke is scheduled for official matters overseas.
