GEORGE TOWN: Storm-lashed Penang is left with scenes of destruction amid hundreds of fallen trees in over 130 locations, leading authorities to call for caution and to wait out the torrential weather.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the Malaysia Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has forecast the storms to continue until tomorrow (Sept 18).
He said fallen trees have been reported in 133 locations on the island since Sunday, while floods were reported in 71 locations.
“On Sunday, fallen trees were reported in 90 locations, in which three houses and eight cars were also damaged.
“On Monday, fallen trees were reported in nine locations.
“As of 12pm today, we have received reports of fallen trees in 43 locations,” he told a press conference in Komtar today (Sept 17).
On the mainland, Chow said trees were reported to have fallen in 30 locations.
He said flash floods following heavy rain were also reported in 71 locations on the mainland today.
“Among them, 43 locations are in central Seberang Prai district and 28 locations in south Seberang Prai district,” he said.
Chow urged locals and tourists to be cautious while on the road until the stormy days subside entirely.
Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng said the clan jetties along Weld Quay were damaged after they were hit by strong waves at 12pm today.
“Planks on the jetties broken by the strong waves and volunteers have been dispatched to monitor and call for repairs when necessary.
“For safety, we advise visitors to refrain from visiting the jetties and coastal areas during high tides,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Department in a statement said two disabled women in their 50s were rescued in Taman Nibong Tebal at about 9.25am today.
“Their houses were flooded following the heavy rain and two disabled victims were trapped in a house.
“Firemen arrived at the scene and brought them out to safety,” said the statement.
