Umno members have been urged to disregard calls for a boycott of the upcoming Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state by-elections on September 9. Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has emphasized the need for Umno members to put aside any differences between parties in the unity government and fully support the Pakatan Harapan candidate. He added that this support is crucial as they hope for reciprocal support in the Pelangai state by-election in Pahang, marking the first step of cooperation to endorse their candidate. Ahmad Zahid expressed his aspirations for victory to further stabilize the state government in Johor and Putrajaya, while dismissing Opposition efforts to create confusion among Malay voters with race, religion, and royalty (3R) issues.
Ahmad Zahid addressed the issue of cooperation between Barisan and DAP, highlighting that the opposition parties have engaged in similar collaborations in the past. He cited the example of PAS’s cooperation with DAP and questioned the inconsistency in their stance. Furthermore, he mentioned Bersatu’s previous cooperation with DAP in the Pakatan Harapan government.
The Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state by-elections are being held following the passing of incumbent MP Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub on July 23. In the Pulai constituency, Pakatan is fielding former Johor state assembly speaker Suhaizan Kaiat, who will face off against Perikatan Nasional’s Zulkifli Jaafar and Independent candidate Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi. In Simpang Jeram, Pakatan’s representative will be Bakri Amanah division deputy chief Nazri Abdul Rahman, contending against Perikatan’s Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya, a vascular consultant and endovascular surgeon, as well as Independent candidate S. Jeganathan, a businessman. – Bernama
