PETALING JAYA: According to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), there is a small portion of the police force that is irresponsible. He admitted that about 2% of the police force were found guilty of wrongdoings in the past year. With a total police force of 137,000, this means that around 2,740 personnel were involved in misconduct.

Tan Sri Razarudin Husain (pic) is concerned about the recent negative publicity surrounding the police force. He is urging officers to fulfill their duties with integrity in order to gain the trust and confidence of the public.

Razarudin emphasized that disciplinary actions, including pay cuts, demotions, suspensions, and dismissals, have been taken against those found guilty of wrongdoings. Additionally, some police officers have also been charged in court for committing serious crimes.

He stated, “This small percentage of rogue cops tarnishes the image of the police force. They will face severe consequences, and we will not tolerate any wrongdoing. Incompetent supervisors or station heads will be replaced with capable officers if necessary.”

The police Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) will continue to work on removing delinquent personnel from the force. Over the past month, several instances involving rogue cops have embarrassed the police top brass.

One incident involved a police station chief from Johor caught on video assaulting a man. Two Ampang Jaya policemen were also arrested for allegedly raping a foreign student and robbing her male friend. Another crime involved four policemen from Kuala Lumpur who were arrested for allegedly extorting RM10,000 from a man in Kepong. In addition, six policemen from the Brickfields district police headquarters were arrested for allegedly processing ketum leaves for distribution and consumption.

Last month, three policemen were arrested for stealing RM85,000 from a store during a raid against illegal immigrants. In addition, a senior cop was charged with murder for allegedly causing the death of a 17-year-old student in a car crash.

According to Razarudin, daily reminders are issued to frontline personnel to stay away from undesirable acts. However, despite this, some personnel still choose to be involved in such acts. Razarudin expressed concern, saying, “It just boils down to one’s character and principles. If a person has evil intentions, no morals, no fear of God and the law, he will commit such acts.”
