More than 20 individuals belonging to religious groups promoting unconventional teachings have been apprehended by the police since last year, according to the Inspector-General of Police.
In a press release on Thursday (Oct 19), Tan Sri Razarudin Husain emphasized the seriousness with which Bukit Aman is addressing this issue due to its potential to disrupt public safety and pose a security threat to the nation.
“A total of 51 police reports have been lodged regarding the activities of these groups throughout the years 2022 and 2023,” said Husain. “Over the same period, the police and relevant authorities have made 23 arrests involving members and leaders of these groups.”
The arrests include 20 individuals from Tarekat Habib Shah, as well as one individual each from Ilmu Akhir Zaman, Nur Mutiara Makrifatullah (NMM), and Suhaini@Sihulk groups.
The IGP further stated that the police are currently monitoring several other groups, including Dewan Perkasa Ekonomi Islam Nusantara (DPEIN), Perjalanan Mimpi Yang Terakhir (PMYT) Millah Abraham, Nur Mutiara Nutmainnah, and The Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light.
“To safeguard public safety and security, the police will not hesitate to take strict action based on the Penal Code and Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 if any members of these deviant teachings are seen engaging in activities or making statements that could incite disharmony, unrest, and disunity, which could potentially affect the country’s security,” he added.
