In Kuala Lumpur, the Immigration Department detained 31 undocumented foreigners in the city centre during an operation called “Ops Kutip”. The operation took place near Suria KLCC, Pavilion shopping centre, and Bukit Bintang on Saturday night. The detainees, aged 19 to 50, were suspected of various offenses, including using passes for business purposes.
The Immigration deputy director-general (Operation) Jafri Embok Taha mentioned that the operation, which started at 9.30 pm with the help of the National Registration Department, involved 46 officers and personnel. In response to public complaints about high numbers of illegal foreigners in these areas, raids were conducted at Suria KLCC and Pavilion.
Prior to the operation, the department conducted surveillance and intelligence gathering for about a week. During the operation, 120 foreigners were checked, with 31 individuals, including two women, detained. Of those detained, 24 were near KLCC and 7 were near Pavilion. The detainees were from various countries including Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nepal, the Philippines, Afghanistan, and Syria.
The Immigration Department intends to bring the detainees to the Kuala Lumpur Immigration office for documentation purposes, with further actions to be taken against those found to have committed offenses. Jafri also noted that foreigners conducting food stall businesses on the sidewalks were typically found to have abused their passes and working permits.
He emphasized their commitment to taking stern action against foreigners who commit offenses or employers who harbor illegals. Notably, their diligence in this matter underscores their dedication to upholding immigration regulations and ensuring the safety and security of the country.
