PETALING JAYA: The PAS green wave in Kedah became a reality in GE15 when it almost made a clean sweep in the state, winning all seats except Sungai Petani.
It won the state along with Bersatu under the Perikatan Nasional banner.
Sungai Petani was won by Pakatan Harapan’s Mohammed Taufiq Johari, the son of incumbent three-term MP Tan Sri Johari Abdul, by a majority of 1,115 votes.
A closer look into GE15 scoresheet for Kedah saw Mohammed Taufiq obtaining equal votes in most polling districts against Perikatan’s Robert Ling Kui Ee.
During the 2018 general election, PAS only managed to get three parliament seats, while Pakatan Harapan won 10 seats and Barisan Nasional got two seats.
In Langkawi, the Election Commission’s scoresheet showed that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was defeated in all voting streams.
Dr Mahathir garnered two-digit votes in most polling districts in Langkawi.
He received 107 votes in Kampung Bukit Malut polling district.
His son Datuk Seri Mukhriz suffered a similar fate. The former Kedah mentri besar lost in all polling districts and did not garner more than 100 votes in all voting streams.
Mukhriz and Dr Mahathir aren’t the only big names to lose in Kedah, as former rural development minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid was also defeated in all voting streams in the Padang Terap parliamentery constituency.
During GE15, Mahdzir polled 17,258 votes against Perikatan’s Nurul Amin Hamid, who got 28,217 votes.
Another political bigwig who lost in most voting streams was Datuk Mahfuz Omar, who only garnered 20,524 votes against Perikatan’s Ahmad Saad Yahaya’s 52,275 votes.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail was booted out of Kulim Bandar Baharu after just serving one term as MP.
The scoresheet for Kulim Bandar Baharu showed that Saifuddin Nasution won in at least 60 voting streams.
There were 351,836 eligible voters who did not turn up to vote in Kedah.
In Langkawi, there were 18,654 voters who did not show up on polling day, which is a figure lower than the 13,518 vote majority won by Perikatan.
In Sungai Petani, 37,400 voters did not show up and Pakatan won the seat with a 1,115 vote majority.
A similar situation was also recorded in Kulim Bandar Baharu, where there were 18,701 voters who did not show up and the seat was won by Perikatan by a 13,061 vote majority.
Analysts have said that the results of certain constituencies could’ve been different if the voter turnout was higher.
