The inaugural National Climate Governance Summit has been launched by Climate Governance Malaysia (CGM) in an effort to address the impending climate crisis from an economic standpoint. The main objective of the summit is to equip Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with crucial industry insights and knowledge to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by the climate emergency. CGM acknowledges the significance of SMEs in the Malaysian economy, as they constitute 97.4% of all businesses and contribute 38.4% to the GDP.
CGM emphasized the importance of involving SMEs in climate and sustainability efforts, stating that without their participation, achieving climate goals would be hindered. Thus, a comprehensive and strategic approach is necessary to enable SMEs to decarbonize smoothly and improve their climate resilience. The organization highlighted the rising demand from stakeholders for increased reporting and disclosure from companies regarding climate risks, both physical and transitional.
SMEs attending the summit will have the opportunity to learn how to identify climate risks and measure and mitigate their impacts, as well as how to seize opportunities arising from the climate crisis. The summit will feature panel sessions and workshops on various topics including climate governance, sustainability, and decarbonization. Over 100 local and foreign experts will participate in the three-day event, which is scheduled to take place from September 5 to September 7.
CGM also announced that interested participants can attend the event in person or virtually. Additionally, all sessions will be recorded and made available on the CGM website and media channel for viewing after the conclusion of the summit.
