A tragic incident occurred on the North-South Expressway in Melaka, resulting in the death of a tourist from Chennai, India. Two others also sustained serious injuries after the bus they were traveling in caught fire following an accident at KM198.
The deceased was identified as Yafarah Taj Fakrudin Hussaini, a 17-year-old who was unable to escape the burning bus during the incident that took place at 3.50am on Saturday (Jan 13), according to Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Arshad Abu.
The tour bus, carrying 28 passengers on its way from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, was engulfed in flames following the collision.
Supt Arshad revealed that Peer Mohamed Kannudeen, 69, from Kalakad, Tamil Nadu, India and Anissa Begum Fakrudin Hussaini, 45, from Chennai, suffered third degree burns. Furthermore, two others sustained minor injuries while a 21-year-old motorcyclist named Haziq Hilmi Razali managed to escape unharmed.
“The deceased and the injured passengers are family members,” stated Supt Arshad, emphasizing the personal impact of the tragedy.
According to Supt Arshad, the accident occurred when the motorcyclist fell off his bike, leading to the bus hitting the motorcycle and subsequently catching fire.
All of the injured individuals were promptly taken to Hospital Alor Gajah for medical treatment.
