SEGAMAT: A fifth-grade student at a Tamil vernacular school in Jementah claims he was hurt after being caned by his principal for not completing homework.
Segamat District Chief of Police, Superintendent Ahmad Zamry Marinsah, stated that a Facebook comment was discovered at 11pm on Tuesday, July 18, related to the incident. The police encouraged the victim to come forward and file a report, and an hour later, the victim’s mother lodged a police report, alleging that her child had been caned by the principal, resulting in injuries to the child’s cheeks, neck, and shoulder.
Superintendent Ahmad Zamry Marinsah stated, “Initial investigation revealed that the student was caned for failing to complete his homework and not paying attention in class.” The case is now being examined under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing harm, which carries a maximum penalty of ten years’ imprisonment, a fine, whipping, or any combination thereof.
“We are finalizing the investigation papers to be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutors for further action. In the meantime, I urge the public not to speculate on the matter,” Superintendent Ahmad Zamry added.
The superintendent also called on parents and the public to report cases of bullying or abuse to the police. Those with information on such incidents can visit the nearest police station or contact the Johor police hotline at 07-221 2999 for assistance.
