KUALA LUMPUR: A 59-year-old man who was detained for a drug offence has died while in custody at the Setiawangsa police station lockup on Tuesday (July 25).
The suspect, initially held under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 on July 6, was placed in the lockup. However, on July 18, the detainee was rearrested for another offence and kept in the same lockup.
According to Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department director, Comm Datuk Seri Azry Ahmad, the detainee had claimed to have a fever on July 21 and was sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for treatment. After receiving treatment, he was brought back to the lockup on the same day.
The incident unfolded on Tuesday when the detainee’s cellmate noticed that he was experiencing difficulty in breathing and was slumped against the wall of the cell.
Upon receiving the report, the authorities immediately contacted the hospital, and an ambulance arrived to take the detainee for urgent medical attention. However, after being examined by a doctor from the Emergency and Trauma Department, it was confirmed that the detainee had passed away.
To ascertain the cause of death, a post-mortem will be carried out on Wednesday, as stated by Comm Azry. He also added that the department’s Criminal and Custodial Death Investigation Unit will conduct an investigation into the matter.
