The Ipoh City Council in Perak has been selected as the first local authority to adopt a new method of road resurfacing. Alongside Kuala Lumpur City Hall, they will be involved in a pilot project focusing on this technology. Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin stated that the method, known as “cuplump modified asphalt” (CMA), uses modified bitumen mixed with coagulated rubber to improve the quality and lifespan of road resurfacing. Rumaizi further added that this innovative technique can reduce the impact of cracks and rutting while also lowering long-term maintenance costs compared to traditional paving methods.
CMA offers numerous advantages including improved quality of the paved surface, enhanced resistance to heavy vehicle load, extreme weather conditions, and fuel pollution. Additionally, the inclusion of coagulated rubber in the road paving material indirectly helps reduce greenhouse carbon emissions as it decreases the amount of asphalt used (the production of which releases gases into the atmosphere). The Ipoh City Council has received a RM5 million allocation for road repairs and resurfacing works.
The allocated funding will be utilized for a 9.5km stretch encompassing areas such as the Tasek Industrial Area, IGB Industrial Area, part of Jalan Bendahara, and the main road at Station 18. The implementation of the project is scheduled to commence in mid-October and is projected to be completed within a timeframe of four to six weeks.
