IPOH: A 51-year-old salesman has lost about RM904,000 to a scam.
Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the victim came across an advertisement on Facebook about the investment scheme on April 15 and clicked on the link.
“The link led him to the WhatsApp instant messaging app where he communicated with a woman.
“On May 1 and 12, the victim put into two different bank accounts belonging to two companies totalling about RM904,000,” Comm Mohd Yusri said in a statement on Tuesday (June 25).
“He then realised he had been cheated after not getting the returns as promised,” he said, adding that a police report was lodged on Monday (June 24).
“The matter is now being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating,” he added.
Comm Mohd Yusri said that people should always be vigilant when coming across advertisements about investment schemes, especially on social media.
“In our efforts to combat investment scams, the police want to remind the people to be more careful.
“The people should check more thoroughly regarding any investment schemes, especially those that promise quick returns and are too good to be true,” he said.
“Checks can be conducted on various platforms that have been set up by the police, Bank Negara Malaysia and the Malaysia Security Commissions,” he added.
