KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional’s upcoming election in Negri Sembilan will be a family affair. Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad’s son and wife will make their debut. Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi made the announcement at the World Trade Centre (WTC) Kuala Lumpur. Mohd Isa’s son, Mohd Najib, will contest in Bagan Pinang, while his wife, Puan Sri Bibi Sharliza Mohd Khaled, will contest in Juasseh. Mohd Isa rejoined Umno in May after quitting in September 2018.
Mohd Isa left the party when he was not fielded as a Barisan candidate. He ran as an independent candidate in the Port Dickson by-election but lost. He managed to secure only 4,230 votes, while Anwar Ibrahim emerged victorious with 31,016 votes. In Negri Sembilan, Defence Minister Mohamad Hasan will defend his Rantau seat, and Negri Umno chief Jalaluddin Alias will make a comeback at Pertang. Barisan will contest 17 seats in Negri, while Pakatan Harapan is expected to contest the remaining 19 seats.
In Terengganu, Barisan will field two former mentris besar and a former deputy minister. Former mentri besar Ahmad Said will contest in Kijal, and Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman will be fielded in Seberang Takir. Former deputy minister Jailani Johari will contest in Ajil. They are among the 27 candidates that Barisan will field in Terengganu, as announced by Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
Barisan has also announced that they will be contesting 108 seats in the upcoming elections across six states. In Kelantan, Barisan will field newcomer Nasrul Hadi Kamaruzaman in the Air Lanas seat. This comes after former Jeli MP Mustapa Mohamed confirmed that he would not be defending his Air Lanas seat as he has retired from politics.
