The export value of the Malaysian jackfruit (nangka) has the potential to reach RM22.1 million by 2025, according to Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Chan Foong Hin. This follows the fruit’s introduction to China, where its export value is currently RM15 million. Chan expressed optimism that the export value could increase to RM22.1 million by 2025, thanks to the fresh jackfruit exports to China. He made these remarks at the 20th China-Asean Expo (CAEXPO) in Nanning, China.
Chan revealed that he accompanied Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his visit to the CAEXPO and the launch of the first shipment of Malaysian jackfruits to China. The opening ceremony of the Malaysia Pavilion in CAEXPO, conducted by Anwar, marked the commencement of nangka exports to China. The Malaysian jackfruit variety for the Chinese market is specifically the J33 variety, which is renowned for its sweetness, crunchy texture, and golden yellow color.
The introduction of jackfruit to China is considered a significant accomplishment, as negotiations with Chinese officials began as early as 2004. The approval for jackfruit imports from Malaysia was finally granted in April of this year after Anwar’s first visit to Beijing as the prime minister.
