JOHOR BARU: A teenager here suffered minor injuries after jumping out of a moving vehicle as a result of a misunderstanding with her ehailing driver.

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Balveer Singh said the 54-year-old male driver picked up the 17-year-old girl in a residential area here at around 4.50pm on Aug 11.

“She ordered the ride to a hypermarket in Tampoi for work.

“However, due to some roadworks along the way, the driver had to change his route.

“When the girl noticed that he was going a different way, she decided to jump out of the moving car,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 18).

ACP Balveer said the driver stopped his vehicle immediately to try and help the girl.

She was later sent to the hospital by a passer-by to treat minor injuries to her knees, arms and back.

“The driver lodged a police report after the incident and also informed the ehailing company. The teenager also lodged a police report.

“Investigations found there was no criminal element involved,” ACP Balveer added.

He advised ehailing drivers to improve their communication with their passengers if they need to take an alternative route.

He added that while the public is reminded to be aware of their surroundings, they should also communicate with their ehailing drivers to avoid any misunderstanding.

“If you still feel unsafe after that, it is better to contact the police immediately as your safety is the priority,” he added.

The incident was circulated on social media with claims that the driver had tried to abduct the girl.
