Three individuals suspected of being involved in the murder of economy rice seller Teh Teik Chye have had their remand extended for another three days to aid in further investigation. They are reported to have been close friends of the senior citizen, who was brutally stabbed 27 times in the parking area of an apartment block in Jalan Perak, Jelutong on Tuesday (Dec 5).

According to George Town acting deputy OCPD Supt V. Saravanan, the remand on the two men and a woman, aged between 29 and 42, was prolonged after the initial order expired on Friday (Dec 8). They are now set to be detained until Monday (Dec 11).

“This is to enable us to carry out further investigations into the murder,” Supt Saravanan explained. He also encouraged anyone with information on the case to come forward.

These individuals are being held under investigation for the incident which falls under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. The police are also examining the closed-circuit TV footage from the location to gather more evidence.
On Tuesday, at 6:18 pm, police were informed about a fight in the area. A witness reported seeing a man lying on the ground in the parking lot of an apartment block and immediately called the police and the victim’s next of kin.

Police discovered 27 stab wounds on the victim’s chest, neck, and abdomen, which were believed to be inflicted by a knife. CCTV footage obtained revealed two suspects entering the area on a motorcycle. It was confirmed that robbery was not the motive as the victim’s belongings were left untouched.

The suspects were apprehended at different areas in Jelutong several hours after the murder, Supt Saravanan said earlier. Teh, the 60-year-old economy rice seller, lived in the apartment block with his children and grandchildren. He was well-known for selling economy rice at the public market at Perak Road.
