GPS will intensify its campaign in preparation for the Jepak by-election on Nov 4, according to Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
The GPS by-election operations director stated that efforts were being made to cover all areas within the constituency.
“Our goal is to introduce our new candidate to the voters, as not everyone may know him, even though he is a local,” he explained during the opening of a digital entrepreneurship awareness programme in Kampung Jepak, Bintulu, on Oct 30.
To contest the by-election, GPS has nominated Iskandar Turkee, former state National Anti-Drug Agency director. The by-election was called due to the passing of assemblyman Datuk Talib Zulpilip on Sept 15.
Iskandar will be in a three-way contest against Stevenson Joseph Sumbang from Parti Bumi Kenyalang and Chieng Lea Phing from Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party.
Awang Tengah stressed the importance of GPS explaining the state government’s policies and development plans to the public.
“Given the abundance of unverified information circulating on social media, it is crucial for us to convey our message to the voters,” he said. “Our commitment is outlined in our manifesto, and with a GPS representative, the people will work alongside the government to facilitate the implementation of development plans.”
The GPS by-election manifesto, launched on Oct 29, focuses on 14 thrusts to establish a progressive and prosperous Jepak that aligns with Sarawak’s vision of achieving developed, high-income status by 2030.
These thrusts include ensuring Sarawak’s political stability and strength, improving government services based on integrity and good governance, developing basic infrastructure, building the Jepak satellite town, creating more resettlement schemes and providing assistance for longhouse construction in Jepak, and enhancing youth participation in Jepak’s development.
