Voters in Jepak have been advised not to listen to certain groups that are urging them not to vote in the upcoming by-election on Saturday, claiming that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will win regardless. Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) deputy president Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan has warned that these attempts to mislead voters could have an impact on voter turnout.

Recently, there have been messages circulating on social media stating that GPS will secure victory even if supporters do not vote. Awang Tengah pointed out that this logic is flawed, as without the support of GPS supporters, it will be difficult for the party to win. He expressed his concerns about these misleading messages while addressing reporters during his campaign in Kampung Hilir Kuala Tatau, which is located approximately 50km away from the by-election area on Tuesday (Oct 31).

The Jepak by-election was called after the death of its six-term assemblyman Datuk Talib Zulpilip, who belonged to GPS and served for many years. In this by-election, three candidates are vying for the seat: Iskandar Turkee from GPS, Stevenson Joseph Sumbang from Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK), and Chieng Lea Phing from Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (Aspirasi).

GPS is a coalition made up of four parties, namely PBB, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

Furthermore, Awang Tengah, who is also the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, criticized those who were engaging in gambling activities related to the by-election outcome. He stressed that such behavior is against the principles of democracy and could potentially undermine the efforts of GPS to achieve a significant victory in the by-election. To him, the by-election is not a matter for gambling; it holds a critical importance in determining the future of the constituency.

Overall, it is crucial for voters in Jepak to not be influenced by the misleading messages suggesting that GPS will win regardless of their votes. Awang Tengah emphasized the need for GPS supporters to participate in the by-election and showcase their support through voting. As the by-election approaches, it remains to be seen how the turnout will be affected by these attempts to mislead the voters.
